The gap

Fewer Allergists. More Allergy.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology projects a 7 percent drop in allergists between 2016 and 2030 while demand rises nearly 30 percent. One patient in five has allergies, so a physician seeing twenty patients a day sees four. Referring them out loses continuity of care, and two thirds of allergy sufferers say they would rather be treated by their primary care doctor than a specialist.Primary care, pediatric and ENT practices are filling the gap by testing and treating in-office.

Candidates

Duration And Severity.

Patients are candidates when symptoms span more than a few months of the year, or significantly erode quality of life despite medication.Medication is a temporary fix; stop it and symptoms return. Immunotherapy is the only treatment shown to modify the underlying disease. Shots deliver it, but require twice-weekly supervised visits, exclude young children and uncontrolled asthmatics, and cannot treat food allergy.Drops remove each of those barriers, which is why they can be prescribed from a primary care office.
Prescribing

From Decision To Delivery.

01
Test or review historyIn-office skin testing or a structured allergy history. Both support a prescription.
02
Fax the prescriptionOne form specifies the environmental serum, the food serum, or both. The compounding pharmacy prepares it to order.
03
Follow up quarterlyPatients dose daily at home and check in every few months. Most report relief within weeks; a three-year course is typical.
