About these articles

Written From The Exam Room.

Our founder spent more than thirty years in private allergy practice before starting AllergyEasy. These pieces began as his blog and have been updated and consolidated. Each one ends the same way, because the question underneath most of them is the same: can this allergy be treated, not just managed? Usually, yes.Nothing here replaces a conversation with your own physician.

How the rankings work

Three Factors.

Prevalence, risk factors and medical factors.Prevalence counts residents with asthma or allergy. Risk factors include pollen scores, air quality and smoke-free laws. Medical factors cover emergency visits, medication use and the number of specialists. Cities in the Southeast, Ohio Valley and Great Lakes dominate most years.Memphis, Richmond, Philadelphia, Detroit and Oklahoma City have led past asthma lists. Check the foundation’s current report for this year; rankings shift.
What it means for you

You Probably Will Not Move.

Asthma went from one person in twelve to one in fourteen nationally in a decade, and no city is free of triggers. The rankings are most useful as a prompt: if you live in a high-pollen, poor-air-quality metro and your asthma tracks the seasons, allergy is almost certainly part of the picture. Testing tells you which triggers, and treatment addresses them where you live.Uncontrolled asthma rules out allergy shots. It does not rule out drops.
