What we treat

By Trigger.

One comprehensive serum covers most of what you breathe; a second covers the common foods.
The pattern

Same Immune Mistake, Different Address.

Every allergic condition starts the same way: the immune system treats something harmless as a threat and releases histamine to fight it.Where that inflammation lands decides the diagnosis. In the skin it is eczema or hives. In the mouth it is oral allergy syndrome. In the airways it is asthma. In the sinuses it is one infection after another.Creams, inhalers and antibiotics treat the address. Immunotherapy treats the mistake.

What is happening

Your Body Mistakes Fruit For Pollen.

Proteins in certain fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts look so much like pollen proteins that the immune system cannot tell them apart. If you are allergic to birch pollen, biting an apple can trigger the same histamine release at the lips, tongue and throat. Researchers estimate about 60 percent of food allergies are actually cross-reactions to pollen.Symptoms start within minutes and usually fade quickly once the food is swallowed. They are irritating rather than dangerous for most people, but true nut allergy must be ruled out.
Cross-reactions

Which Pollens, Which Foods.

Birch and alder treesApple, apricot, cherry, kiwi, nectarine, peach, pear, plum, carrot, celery, almond, hazelnut, walnut.
GrassMelon, watermelon, orange, tomato, kiwi, peas, potato, peanut.
Ragweed and mugwortBanana, cantaloupe, honeydew, cucumber, zucchini, sunflower seeds, chamomile.

Living with it

Peel It, Cook It, Or Treat It.

The offending proteins sit mostly in the skin and break down with heat.Peeled, canned or cooked versions of a trigger food are often tolerated: applesauce instead of a raw apple, cooked carrots instead of sticks. If that is enough for you, it is a reasonable way to live.If the list of foods you avoid keeps growing, or symptoms include throat swelling, see a provider. Oral allergy syndrome usually begins in older children, teens and young adults, and can appear at any age.
Questions

Oral Allergy Syndrome

Is it a real food allergy? It is a true allergic reaction, but to a pollen look-alike protein. If you can eat the food cooked or peeled without symptoms, it is almost certainly oral allergy syndrome rather than a primary food allergy.
Can it be dangerous?Rarely. Most reactions stay in the mouth. Reactions to nuts deserve a proper evaluation, because a true nut allergy can progress to anaphylaxis.
Why did it start in adulthood?Allergies can begin at any age. As a new pollen allergy develops, its matching foods start to react.
